Magic Carpet
Completed: March 2001
Size: 78" x 83"
Description: When Cheri showed me the fabric for Magic Carpet, I was less than enthusiastic. Actually, I thought the fabric seemed rather dull and uninteresting. But Cheri saw much more in the fabric that I could have imagined.
Magic Carpet turned out to be a very elegant quilt garnered with more than 9300 Swarovski crystals. I could not believe the gorgeous antique “button” design work created by Cheri. This was one of the first quilts I envisioned with freehand Trapunto. All the motifs are original designs. Other trapuntoed areas on the quilt are freehand. The motifs are stitched with metallic thread. The rest of the quilt is quilted with Mettler poly embroidery thread. It turned out to be pure “magic” for both of us.
Awards: Master's blue ribbon and merit quilting award at the Dallas Quilt Celebration, 2001; Best of Show at Machine Quilters Showcase, 2001, and a first place ribbon at the International Quilt Festival in Houston 2001; honorable mention NQA 2001; 1st place Quilting the Quilt 2002; juried AQS 2002; special exhibit in New England Museum, published in Ultimate Guide to Longarm Quilting.
